Oudh perfume oil, which is extracted from Agarwood trees, is the most expensive perfume in the world.

Firstly, the trees from which this perfume is created are rare and only grow in a very limited region near the planet’s equator. These trees require enormous amounts of rainfall and very humid conditions to develop. But that not the hardest part.

In order for these plants to be create their mystical scents they need to be infected by insects which live and die in the tree itself. This process itself takes decades and it may take a tree close to 40 years to reach the harvesting stage.

The tree is then removed and taken to specialised processing factories to extract the perfume. The wood is crushed to a powder, mixed with water and then stored in barrels for a minimum of 30 days. After this time, the material is placed in a distillation machine, which is gas fired continuously over a period of 7 days. The water and oil separate and you have the pure extract to use in perfumes. The water and the sediment are also used in burners and air fresheners.

A kilo of wood will only generate a few grams of pure Oudh perfume oil. A whole tree may only produce a litre or so and that is why Oudh perfume oil is amongst the most expensive substances on the globe.
